For a standard garage or workshop slab, we factor in regular vehicle use, heavy load requirements, and potential equipment storage. This dictates the slab thickness, the grade of reinforcement mesh used, and the type of finish applied. We also consider site access and ensure the final surface is smooth, level, and easy to maintain.

A quality slab requires a methodical approach. Here is our standard construction process, adapted depending on the intended use of the slab:

Slab thickness and reinforcement depend entirely on the project type, load requirements, soil conditions, engineering specifications, and intended use. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

As general guidance, a small garden shed slab or patio might only require a 100mm thickness with standard SL72 mesh. However, garages, commercial slabs, and heavy-use areas may require a 150mm or thicker slab, heavier SL82 or SL92 mesh, and deeper edge beams. We always ensure that the preparation matches the demands of the structure that will sit on top of it.

Getting the levels right is critical. We pay close attention to slab levels, fall direction, stormwater flow, and overall site drainage. Poorly planned levels can lead to water pooling, uneven finishes, or major moisture issues around doors, garages, paths, and outdoor living areas.

We also install heavy-duty moisture barriers (vapour barriers) beneath the slab where required. This prevents ground moisture from rising through the porous concrete, protecting interior floors, structural timber, and stored goods from dampness.

The cost of pouring a concrete slab varies based on several factors. The total square metres and the required slab thickness are the most obvious cost drivers. However, site preparation often plays a major role. The amount of excavation required, the ease of site access, and whether we need to bring in a concrete pump can all affect the final price.

Other factors include the type of concrete mix, the grade of steel reinforcement, complex formwork, moisture barrier installation, and specific engineering requirements.
